About Course

This foundational course provides a comprehensive understanding of human physiology with special emphasis on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and related systems critical to cardiopulmonary perfusion. It equips students with the scientific knowledge required to operate heart-lung machines, manage extracorporeal circulation, and support patients during open-heart surgeries and other advanced cardiac procedures. The course integrates physiological principles with clinical relevance to perfusion technology, enabling students to monitor, interpret, and respond to dynamic changes in organ function during bypass and critical care scenarios.

What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of the course, students will be able to:
  • Explain the normal structure and functions of cells, blood, and major organ systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, excretory, nervous, and endocrine).
  • Analyze physiological mechanisms involved in acid-base balance, hemostasis, cardiac output, blood pressure regulation, and gas exchange.
  • Interpret common physiological parameters and test results (e.g., ECG, blood pressure, ESR, lung volumes, renal function tests) relevant to perfusion practice.
  • Demonstrate basic practical skills in hematological and cardiorespiratory assessments.
  • Apply physiological knowledge to identify deviations (e.g., hypertension, acidosis, respiratory disorders) and their implications for cardiopulmonary bypass and patient safety.
