About Course

Principles of Anaesthesia II is an advanced-level course designed for Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology (OTAT) students to build upon foundational knowledge of anaesthesia practices. This subject focuses on the application of anaesthetic techniques in diverse clinical settings, ensuring safe and effective patient care during surgical procedures.

The course provides in-depth understanding of general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, and monitored anaesthesia care. Students will learn about advanced airway management techniques, including endotracheal intubation, use of supraglottic airway devices, and ventilator management. Emphasis is placed on the pharmacology of commonly used anaesthetic drugs such as intravenous agents, inhalational agents, muscle relaxants, and analgesics, along with their indications, contraindications, and side effects.

A significant component of the course is patient monitoring, where students gain knowledge about ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography, blood pressure monitoring, and interpretation of vital parameters during surgery. The course also covers anaesthesia considerations for special patient groups including paediatric, geriatric, obstetric, and critically ill patients.

Students are trained to assist anaesthesiologists in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, and airway obstruction. Infection control practices, sterilization techniques, and operation theatre protocols are also emphasized to maintain patient safety.

By the end of this course, OTAT students will develop the competence to support anaesthesia procedures efficiently, ensure patient safety, and respond effectively in perioperative care settings.
