About Course

This foundational course introduces students to the principles of general surgery, surgical anatomy, and perioperative care, with a focus on cardiovascular and thoracic procedures relevant to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) technology. Topics include basic surgical terminology, wound healing, asepsis and sterilization (linking to CSSD protocols), pre-operative evaluation, surgical instruments, common surgical emergencies, and an overview of cardiothoracic surgeries such as CABG, valve replacements, and aortic repairs. Emphasis is placed on the perfusionist’s role in the surgical team, infection control, and ethical considerations in the operating room.
