      Pongal Festival

      Pongal is one of the most important and traditional festivals celebrated in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a harvest festival that expresses gratitude to nature, the Sun God, and the farmers who work hard to grow food. Pongal is usually celebrated in the month of January and marks the beginning of the Tamil month called Thai. The festival lasts for four days and is filled with joy, traditions, and cultural activities.

      The first day of the festival is called Bhogi. On this day, people clean their houses and decorate them beautifully. Old and unused things are thrown away to symbolize the removal of negativity and the start of a fresh life. Families also light bonfires early in the morning and celebrate the beginning of the festival with happiness.

      The second day is known as Thai Pongal, which is the main day of the festival. On this day, people cook a special dish called Pongal, made with newly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery. The dish is prepared in a clay pot and allowed to boil over, which symbolizes prosperity and abundance. When the pot overflows, people happily shout “Pongalo Pongal!” to celebrate the occasion. The prepared Pongal is first offered to the Sun God as a sign of gratitude for a good harvest.
