      Tamil New Year

Tamil New Year, known as Puthandu, is an important festival celebrated by Tamil people all over the world. It usually falls on April 14th and marks the beginning of the Tamil calendar year. This festival is a time of joy, hope, and new beginnings, bringing families together in celebration.

On the day of Puthandu, people wake up early in the morning and take a bath to start the day fresh. One of the most special traditions is seeing the “Kanni,” which is an arrangement of auspicious items like fruits, flowers, gold, coins, and a mirror. It is believed that seeing these items first thing in the morning brings prosperity and good luck throughout the year.

Homes are cleaned and beautifully decorated with colorful kolams at the entrance. People wear new clothes and visit temples to seek blessings for a happy and successful year ahead. Special prayers are offered, and many families also listen to the Panchangam reading, which predicts the fortunes of the coming year.

Food plays a very important role in Tamil New Year celebrations. A special dish called “Mangai Pachadi” is prepared, which has a unique mix of sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy flavors. This dish symbolizes the different experiences of life—happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise—and teaches us to accept all of them equally.

Families come together to enjoy a grand feast, share happiness, and exchange greetings. Elders bless the younger members, and gifts are sometimes given as a sign of love and goodwill.

In conclusion, Tamil New Year is not just a festival but a celebration of life, culture, and tradition. It reminds people to welcome the new year with positivity, gratitude, and hope for a brighter future.
