COSMECEUTICAL EVOLUTION AND COSMETIC EXCIPIEN
Cosmeceuticals evolved from traditional cosmetics, which focused solely on beautifying the skin, to hybrid products incorporating bioactive ingredients with therapeutic benefits. The term "cosmeceutical" was coined in the 1980s by Albert Kligman, marking a shift toward scientifically backed formulations like retinoids and antioxidants for anti-aging and skin health. This evolution bridged cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, offering drug-like effects (e.g., reducing wrinkles or hyperpigmentation) without full drug regulation. Cosmetic excipients are inactive ingredients that form the base of formulations, ensuring stability, texture, and effective delivery of active components. Key excipients include surfactants (for cleansing/emulsifying), humectants (for moisture retention), emollients (for softening), rheology modifiers (for viscosity), and preservatives (for shelf life), enhancing overall product performance and safety.
